From Ipswich’s The Queensland Times: “Some might call me paranoid or neurotic with regards to the things I do (like wiping down tables or chairs or even play toys when we are out) but other mums with children who suffer from anaphylaxis will know exactly how I feel…” This comment from the mother of a food-allergic tot struck a chord with me. From RedOrbit (Dallas, TX): UK’s Food Standards Agency has announced that two ready meal products sold in Asda stores and smaller retailers do not have the correct allergen labeling. According to the agency, it has been informed that both the products contain nuts and ghee (milk) but the product’s allergen information only mentions the presence of seafood. – Click here for the alert. However, since the short piece doesn’t mention what kind of nuts (peanuts? treenuts?), I checked on another site and discovered that the offending ingredient is cashew nuts.

Comical piece downplays a wonderful story

From the Sydney Morning Herald (Australia): I’m about three metres up, one foot on a ladder, the other foot on a bendy tree branch. There’s a fair wind blowing. I am holding a chainsaw. I have come here to prune some limbs, which I am hoping will belong to the tree. My neighbour is watching me from over the fence. His grandson has a nut allergy, and my pecan tree is dropping nuts over his fence. I can hardly refuse his request to chop it back. My delighted neighbour is shouting encouragement. — This piece may be about the writer’s comical decision-making and the trouble it gets him into, but I got something different from it. It’s heartwarming to know there are people out there willing to sacrifice something of their own to protect another’s child. And that wasn’t even the main point of the piece.
